[VG Blog] - Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction (PS3)

Posted by PureLionHeart - July 22nd, 2007

VG Blog installments:
So Many Video Games, So Little Time
Assassin's Creed (PS3, 360, PC)
Future VG Blogs
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction (PS3)

VG Blog is, simply put, where I discuss anything video game related. Previews, reviews, my own game progress, etc. Hope you enjoy.

On the docket today: Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction, an upcoming game for the Playstation 3.

First, some history.
Ratchet & Clank is a platformer and shooter series, the brainchild of Insomniac Games, which began in 2002 with the first installment, aptly named Ratchet & Clank. It is a Sony-exclusive series. The series generally involves platformer-style jumping, puzzle solving, and shooting. It is a "funny" series, with jokes around every corner, usually in the form of incompetent villains and ridiculous weaponry. The series has 7 games in total. They are:

Ratchet & Clank (PS2)
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (PS2)
Ratchet & Clank: Going Mobile (Mobile Phone)
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal (PS2)
Ratchet & Clank: Deadlocked (PS2)
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (PSP)
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction (PS3) (Upcoming)

Ratchet is the main protagonist in the series, and is a creature known as a Lombax (Similar to a bipedal Bobcat). He is a born mechanic, and throughout the series becomes a pan-galactic hero. He is skilled in countless forms of firearms and weaponry, and travels with his friend and sidekick, Clank. Despite being a Lombax, he knows nothing of his race or past.
Clank is Ratchet's closest friend and sidekick. He was created by his "Mother" (A super computer) to stop the evil plan present in the first game. He has a strong moral code, and is the more popular of the duo.

Now, with the backstory done, to the game itself.
Ratchet & Clank Future sees the two heroes relaxing on Metropolis, when an invasion occurs, the target appearing to be Ratchet himself. The story will reportedly explore much of Ratchet's origin, as well as the origin of the Lombaxes themselves.

The game also returns to it's platforming roots, an element that was strayed and near-eliminated in the last console game, Deadlocked. Other than this, the game will retain all its standbys. You'll travel from planet to planet, utilize a vast and ridiculous arsenal of weaponry, and cause ultimate destruction.

Confirmed weapons for the game:
Groovitron: A projectile that , upon impact with the ground, creates a disco ball and plays funky music, forcing all enemies to dance, effectively stunning them.
Tornado Launcher: Throw a tornado that sucks up all enemies, controled by the Sixaxis controller.
Pyro Blaster: You're typical flamethrower weapon to burn enemies.
Fusion Grenade: Basic flashy damaging grenade with splash damage.

As well, Clank will be once again playable in the game, and the classic RPG elements will return, allowing you to level up not only Ratchet, but your weapons as well. The "Callenge Mode" will also return, allowing you to replay the story with all your weaponry and Bolts (The game's currency), in order to gain further power.

All in all, this installment in the series is looking exceedingly excellent. The graphics are top-notch and weaponry is shaping up to be quite a unique arsenal. The return of platforming is the greatest appeal to me personally, as well.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction is estimated to hit stores on October 2nd, 2007, exclusively for the Playstation 3.

goood review.

Why thanks. It's a preview, so that makes it better.

This game is going to rule!
I'm buying a ps3 just for ratchet & clanck and mgs

That's pretty much me as well, but there are some other awesome games, like Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil 5 & GTA IV, cooming to the PS3 as well (Not pS3 exclusives though). And the big hitters like Final Fantasy are a ways away yet. Still though, I think these games are gonna show some PS3 growth.

Srry for the double post, but you forget one confirmed weapon,
The weapon that turns enemys into pingeons
I believe I saw it in a gamesppot ingame trailer

But still.. a good Preview =D

Ahh, you're right. I believe it's called simply the transmorpher at the moment, but it turns them into penguins actually, if memory serves. Thanks for pointing that out. Helps me be more careful next time.

ZOMG! Rachet and Clank go HD. And you are always welcome at jewdudewtf.newgrounds.com

YAYZ!

lol, i remember when i played the original ratchet & clank obsessively....... good times.....

Especially when you got the R.Y.N.O.

Rip Ya a New One!

Ratchet and Clank has got to be one of my favorite franchises of all time. Any and all future releases in the series, as well as the third God of War title asre the only reason I can see NEEDING a ps3.

Also, challenge mode is a dream. Seeing how the weapons change (sometimes completely) when you get the ultimate upgrade is always a treat. The most radical change I've seen is the lava gun that morphed into a little molten boulder shooter.

In any case, the awesome weapons, brilliant dialogue, and near-orgasmic gameplay always leave me wanting some more Lombax.

Also Captain Quark.

can't waitttttttt.

One of mine as well. Those two games are also a reason for me, but future Final Fantasy titles and MGS4 are other title reasons.

I've always love any type of mode that allows for replay. I can't recall all the weapons and they're look, but I always enjoed seeing the Gravity Bomb of Going Commando to the Mini-Nuke. Seeing a mushroom loud every blast was just satisfying. And knowing you're strengthening your weapon with every foe felled was all the more satisfying.

The one thing that has me said is that reportedly, with the exception of naturally Ratchet & Clank, as well as Captain Quark, few if any other characters will be retuning. I'll still hoping for Al.

Thanks for the comment, man.

So I hear you have a plushie Chief Wiggum.

I'm officially jealous.

True, and you should be, but you're still cool. <3

I just picked up my first R&C game, actually. Probably a bad idea to start on Up Your Arsenal, but it was cheap and I'm having a blast right now. I didn't think it was one of those games that had much of a plot, but looks like I'm wrong. I'll be sure to get the two before it after I'm done so I can understand all the inside jokes that I know I'm missing.

Good to see that although Insomniac did a great job of fucking up Spyro after the PS1, they've made up for it.

True enough, but they also did a good job with Resistance: Fall Of Man. I'd definitely recommend trying to nab the other two, and even Deadlocked (Though it's much more of a shooter than a platformer, and easily my least favorite of the series).

Plus, the world needs more Quark.
